Twelve years ago, a team of Ā鶹¹ū¶³ faculty members discovered their common hobby of playing instruments at a Department of Psychological Sciencesā event. After that, they created a band that now performs under the name Diminished Faculties. The band name Diminished Faculties was created as a pun ā several band members study memory and other cognitive functions.
āWe thought āhey, letās get together and start jamming,āā says John Dunlosky, Ph.D., psychology professor. āThis developed the first version of our band, and it just kept transforming over the years.ā
Founding members, Dr. Dunlosky, Katherine Rawson, Ph.D., and John Updegraff, Ph.D., all professors in Kent Stateās Department of Psychological Sciences, started practicing in Drs. Dunlosky and Rawsonās basement, where they still practice today.
āWeāre one step above a D.J. or house band, kind of like a novelty,ā Dr. Gunstad says. āItās a chance to be around fun people outside of work.ā
The band has changed names and members over the years. Currently, Diminished Faculties consists of Department of Psychological Sciencesā faculty members Dr. Rawson; Dr. Updegraff; Dr. Dunlosky; Mary Beth Spitznagel, Ph.D., associate professor; John Gunstad, Ph.D., professor; and Christopher Was, Ph.D., associate professor.
āHonestly, we enjoy the practices more than the actual gigs,ā Dr. Dunlosky says. āEvery once in a while, we will play a song really well, and thatās a lot of fun.ā
Diminished Faculties plays a set list containing cover songs from the 80s, 90s and 2000s, adding new songs on occasion to appeal to younger listeners. Performing an average of one gig a year, the band says it is more about having the creative outlet.
The band has a wide arrangement of instruments, playing traditional instruments such as guitar, bass and drums, along with the keyboard, bongos, triangle, maracas and the occasional tambourine.
āAt the end of the evening when everyone is singing along and dancing, thatās way more fun for us,ā Dr. Dunlosky says. āItās always memorable when people actually want an encore, which we are never prepared for.ā
Recently, the band played at Kent Stateās Faculty Club meeting, and said they hit a huge mark of success when faculty members were up and dancing.
āThat was quite memorable to see some of the faculty out there,ā Dr. Gunstad says. āI think we even had a couple of administrators out there as well.ā
Diminished Faculties recently performed at Venice CafƩ on Nov. 16.
