It is that time of year again, Flashes! After weeks of classes and activities, you are reaching the near end of the Spring 2025 tunnel. As anyone can imagine, this can feel and be stressful, no matter how much we know the material or how many times we’ve edited that final paper.
To help relieve stress, it is not only important to take breaks to rest our brains, but to also recognize the resources that will help you succeed. If we want to finish the spring semester strong, being prepared is the key.

Talk to a Therapist through CAPS
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers both in-person and telehealth services for students. From workshops to stress reduction options, CAPS can help you mentally and emotionally gear up for finals. There are a variety of options to choose from – individual counseling, group counseling, self-help resources, and more. If you want to set up a meeting with them, head to The CAPS office in Van Campen Hall across from the Ice Arena.

Schedule your Exams through Student Accessibility Services
If you are connected with Student Accessibility Services (SAS), it is important that you schedule your final exams at least 3 days prior to exam day. If the 3-day deadline passes, SAS will not be able to schedule your exam. You can follow step-by-step directions and a video on our office’s tutorial page. The sooner you schedule your final exams; the sooner you’ll have one less task off your plate. It only takes a few moments to do so!

Take a Brain Break
It is important not to push yourself too hard when studying. To prevent burning out, be sure to take breaks between study sessions. One thing I like to do is the 20-5-5 method. Study for 20 minutes with active note-taking, spend 5 minutes reviewing and summarizing any key points, take a 5-minute break, and repeat. It’s a helpful way to give your brain mini breaks, keep track of time, and spread your work out.

Eat and Sleep!
Sometimes, we tend to minimize or ignore the importance of sleep and eating enough when studying for finals. Be mindful to give yourself a good night’s rest, a solid nap, and full meals are important for your brain to retain and learn information. If you have trouble remembering to eat or sleep, set an alarm notification for yourself or have a friend help keep you accountable.

Tutoring and Writing Options
Need some extra help with an assignment or exam preparation? Be sure to visit the Academic Success Center for Tutoring options! It’s never wrong to ask for help. Need a second opinion on your final essay draft? Visit the Writing Center on the 4th floor of the library.
