Viewing Options in the Gradebook – Sort
The next few Quick Tips will be all about different viewing options you might use in the Gradebook.
The default view in the Gradebook is a table with students listed in rows, alphabetically, and columns ordered as they are arranged in the Assignment Index. Many instructors leave this default view in their courses; however, you might explore adjusting this view based on your personal preferences.
Gradebook Sorting Options
Here are some tips on how to sort and arrange your Gradebook.
From Course Navigation, click on the Grades link.
Click on the Settings (gear) icon to open Gradebook Settings.
Expand the View Options tab (1), then click the Arrange By drop-down menu (2).
This menu offers options to arrange the columns by:- Assignment Name
- Due Date – Assignments without a due date will be considered “new” assignments
- Point Value
- Module Appearance
Click on the Apply Settings button to save any changes.
Manual Adjustments
If none of the Arrange By options are quite what you are looking for, you can manually arrange gradebook columns as well. Simply click on the column heading, then drag it to your desired location. The new arrangement will remain in place until the columns are reordered.

Instructors also have the option to resize column widths. In the column title row, hover over the dividing line between columns . When the pointer changes to a resize cursor (two-directional arrow), click and drag the column to the desired width.

Keep an eye out for next week’s Quick Tip, where we will discuss more viewing options in the Gradebook.
